Special Assistant to the President for Finance and Investment, Jito Kayumba, has called for strengthened trust, innovation and integrity in measurements, saying accurate measurement systems are critical to economic growth, investment and consumer protection.
Speaking as Guest of Honour during the 2026 World Metrology Day on Wednesday commemorations held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, Mr. Kayumba said metrology remains at the centre of trade, industry, health, mining, agriculture and energy sectors.
He noted that without accurate measurements, markets would lose credibility, businesses would struggle to compete fairly and consumers would be exposed to exploitation.
Mr. Kayumba commended the Zambia Metrology Agency for its continued role in safeguarding fairness in trade and ensuring confidence in measurements across the country. He said government recognises the importance of a strong national quality infrastructure in attracting investment and supporting Zambia’s industrialisation agenda.
The Guest of Honour further urged institutions to embrace technology and innovation in measurement systems in order to respond to emerging global trends and modern trade demands.
Meanwhile, Board Chairperson of the Zambia Metrology Agency said the commemoration was not merely a scientific event, but a reminder that measurements affect the daily lives of every citizen.
The Board Chairperson stated that from fuel pumps, supermarket scales, hospital equipment and mining operations, accurate measurements are essential in protecting both consumers and businesses. He added that the Agency remains committed to strengthening public confidence through effective regulation, inspections and stakeholder engagement.
And Executive Director Humphrey Nkobeni said the Agency had continued recording positive performance in various operational areas aimed at ensuring fairness and accuracy in trade measurements.
Mr. Nkobeni highlighted the Agency’s interventions in the petroleum sector, manufacturing industry, transport systems and verification of measuring instruments across the country. He said the Agency was also expanding its technical services in response to changing industry needs and technological advancements.
He further thanked cooperating partners, stakeholders and exhibitors for supporting the successful hosting of the 2026 World Metrology Day commemorations, describing the event as an important platform for promoting awareness on the importance of metrology in national development.
This year’s commemorations brought together government officials, regulators, industry players, cooperating partners,the academia under the global UNESCO World Metrology Day celebrations.
