The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA), led by Executive Director Mr. Humphrey Nkobeni, paid a courtesy call on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) where they were warmly received by Director General Mr. Barry Lwendo and senior members of staff.
The fruitful engagement provided an opportunity for the two institutions to explore areas of collaboration, particularly around enhancing public awareness of ZMA’s mandate.
During the meeting, Mr. Nkobeni highlighted ZMA’s critical role in regulating measurements across all sectors of the economy. He explained that the Agency oversees the accuracy of measurements in dimension, mass, volume, and pressure, ensuring that products reaching consumers meet the required standards.
“ZMA is plugged into all industries, ensuring that products that reach the market are of accurate quantities. In the past, you used to hear stories of underweight fertilizer or mealie meal, but now we are diligently checking these products and processes to ensure we don’t have underweights. In the 2024–2025 season, we received zero complaints on farming inputs,” he said.
Mr. Nkobeni further emphasized ZMA’s regulatory role in the petroleum sector, where the Agency ensures that all instruments used in the distribution chain are accurate and compliant.
“You see those tanker trucks that import petroleum products? We have to verify the quantity of those compartments—whether they are accurately 5,000 litres, 7,000 litres, and so on. For those trucks to be on the road, they must be certified by ZMA. We regulate measurement throughout the petroleum distribution chain until the fuel reaches the filling station, where the dispenser is verified and a ZMA sticker placed on it,” he explained.
In response, Mr. Lwendo expressed gratitude for the visit and reaffirmed ZNBC’s commitment to partnering with national institutions such as ZMA.
“ZNBC is a public institution with nationwide reach, and ZMA is welcome. You should leverage this platform to disseminate information about your mandate to the masses. We need to enhance this relationship and explore mutual areas of collaboration. It is a public requirement for citizens to be aware of what regulators like yourselves are doing,” he said.
As part of the engagement, Mr. Lwendo led the ZMA delegation on a tour of the ZNBC facilities to appreciate the Corporation’s operations.
