The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) today held a strategic meeting with the Biomedical Society of Zambia (BMSZ) aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving calibration services provided to the health sector.
The meeting was held with ZMA Director of Scientific and Industrial Metrology, Mr. Fredrick Hamutunda, BMSZ President Mr. Mutale Mubanga, Ministry of Health’s National Quality Management System (QMS) cordinator Ms. Mutinta Shisholeka, Principal Technical Regulations Officer from the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (MCTI), Mr. Moses Ngosa, and ZMA Manager of Physical Metrology, Mr. Daniel Mutale.
The primary objective of the meeting was to identify and strategize areas of partnership that will ensure more efficient, accurate , and accessible calibration services for medical and laboratory equipment across Zambia’s healthcare system.
Calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting the precision and accuracy of measuring instruments. In the health sector, where accurate measurements can be the difference between correct and incorrect diagnoses, calibration plays a critical role in safeguarding patient safety and ensuring the reliability of test results.
ZMA, as the national regulator on measurement standards, provides calibration services for a range of critical equipment used in hospitals, laboratories, and research institutions. Some of the instruments calibrated include micropipettes, weight sets, analytical balances, digital scales, pressure gauges, measuring cylinders, cold rooms, ovens, liquid-in-glass thermometers, digital thermometers, and flasks.
