The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has commenced a three-day workshop on the Quality Management System (QMS), aimed at strengthening the agency’s commitment to international standards, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.
The workshop was opened by Acting Executive Director, Dr. Eng Michael Nsefu, who underscored the importance of implementing an Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) across various departments of the institution, including Corporate Services, Finance, Procurement, and Internal Audit.
The QMS is a formalized framework that documents processes, procedures, and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and objectives. It is designed to coordinate and direct an organization’s activities to meet customer and regulatory requirements, while also improving efficiency and effectiveness on a continuous basis.
Speaking during the opening, Dr. Eng Nsefu emphasized that the adoption of an integrated QMS is not just about following procedure but represents a broader institutional vision.
“It is a strategic imperative. It anchors the credibility, efficiency, environmental responsibility, and occupational safety of our institution,” said Dr. Eng Nsefu.
He noted that in today’s evolving regulatory and operational landscape, systems such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management) are essential for institutions seeking to remain compliant and competitive.
“The QMS defines how modern institutions operate, remain compliant and continue to grow in trust and stature,” he added.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the IQMS, Dr. Eng Nsefu stated that the system is central to ZMA’s mission and values.
“This IQMS is pivotal to our mandate. It reinforces our core values of accuracy, transparency, and safety. It ensures that our work meets international standards, protects the environment, and safeguards the well-being of our staff,” he said.
The workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools required for the successful implementation of the IQMS, further embedding a culture of quality and accountability within the agency.
