Today, the Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) Executive Management, led by Executive Director Mr. Humphrey Nkobeni, visited the PDV Metals plant at the invitation of the company’s management. The visit was aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of PDV Metals’ production processes and exploring potential areas of collaboration.
ZMA Executive Director was flunked by Director Scientific and Industrial Metrology Mr. Fredrick Hamutunda, Director Legal Metrology Dr. Eng. Michael Nsefu, Legal Counsel Mr. Andrew Chakanika , Human Resource and Administration Manager Ms. Mwendabai Kakula and Executive Assistant Ms. Brenda Mumba.
The team from ZMA was taken on a guided tour of the plant by the PDV Metals Managing Director Assistant. The tour provided ZMA’s executive team with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the operations at the plant, and identify areas where ZMA could provide technical support. Specific focus was placed on instruments used in commercial transactions and calibration of equipment.
Key pieces of equipment that ZMA officials reviewed during the visit included the weighbridge, temperature probes, pressure gauges, length measures, and strength testers. These instruments play an essential role in ensuring accuracy and reliability in the production of steel. Weighbridges, for instance, are used to measure the weight of materials transported in and out of the plant, while temperature probes and pressure gauges monitor crucial conditions in the manufacturing process. Length measures ensure precision in the dimensions of steel products, and strength testers are vital for assessing the durability and quality of the finished materials.
In his remarks, ZMA Executive Director Mr. Nkobeni highlighted the critical role the agency plays in regulating measurements in Zambia, ensuring that they are traceable to international standards.
“ZMA has the sole mandate to regulate measurements, and these standards must always be traceable to international guidelines,” Mr. Nkobeni explained.
